Transportation Reimbursement

How the application process works

Utdanningsetaten in Oslo kommune - UDE - (Education Agency in Municipality of Oslo) is responsible for administering the school shuttle service for students in public and private schools. Students, depending on age and distance to the school, can be granted a Ruter-card for T-bane and bus or a taxi in special cases.

All applications for school transport must go through the parents, to ensure an effective and safe application process. This means that the parents must apply for school transport.

It must be applied again for each school year for the student. What kind of accommodation service a student is entitled to can vary from school year to school year depending on the terms.

If a student is granted an accommodation service the parents and the school receives a decision letter from UDE. UDE covers the students’ transportation costs. Distance between the child’s home address and the school determines if a student has a right to get this offer.

According to the Education Act (Opplæringsloven), the distance needs to be at least 4 kilometers for students from 2nd to 10th grade, and 2 kilometers for 1st graders. This offer is only available inside the borders of Oslo.

Exception from the rules above may happen in cases where the child have functional disabilities, temporary injuries, or the school route is dangerous or difficult because of climate or traffic conditions.
In some situations, like extra dangerous or difficult school road, grade 1 and grade 2 students can be granted a taxi to the school. If taxi service is granted to the student, all communication goes thorugh the school.

Note:
If a student is granted an accommodation service for T-bane or bus a monthly Ruter# pass needs to be bought by the parents at first. Then this cost will be reimbursed by the municipality by transferring the money to the parents’ bank account. Only students’ costs are covered.
The school is responsible for sending information about the students to the UDE for reimbursement.
